AUTHOR Q & A

How did you become a writer? Tell me about your writing journey.

I’ve always been a writer, though I’ve only entered the world of fiction in the past five years. For as long as I can remember, books were my haven, and I’ve been writing and telling stories nearly as long. As a child, this looked like silly stories and a family newsletter called Anna, Inc. By high school I left fiction behind to focus on developing my nonfiction writing skills, largely in literary and historical analysis during various AP classes. I continued writing in these fields during my undergraduate years, adding communication research into the mix. Writing fiction and nonfiction seems different on the surface, but the most talented understand the unbreakable connection between the two. Quality fiction across genres is informed by extensive research, maybe on settings and plots, or maybe in how relationships develop and people grow. Quality nonfiction incorporates strong narrative, telling a story through facts and figures that not only contributes to its field, but also impacts the perspectives of its readers. After my son was born, I returned to writing after many years without it. I’d left the classroom and missed sharing my stories and historical perspectives with others, so I began ghost writing for an agency. It wasn’t long before the creative itch grew into something it hadn’t since I was younger than a teenager - the desire to write creative fiction. I leaned into it, and I’m so happy I did, as it’s become one of the best parts of my life.

What genres do you write?

I read and write across genres, so it’s tough to nail down a concise answer to this question. Right now, I publish mystery, first in the collection of short stories (Cove Harbor Comeuppance, 2025) and now in full length novels (Beyond the Sea, 2026). Both of these published works will have sequels in the same genre. That being said, I love to write more than just mystery. I am working through the fifth draft of a fantasy novel written with my former tenth grade students in mind. I am also one draft into a coming-of-age short story collection that does not fit neatly into one genre, though I would likely place it into young adult fiction if I had too. I also write microfiction, short stories, and even some (mediocre) poetry. I’ve recently been exploring vignettes, which I’ve been enjoying immensely.

What inspires your stories?

My life inspires my stories. That might be cliche, but it’s the best answer I have. I am inspired immensely by my upbringing on the ocean, the small community in which I was raised, and the exposure to the variety of people and backgrounds that become familiar when you live in a place like the Hamptons. Working on Main Street for a decade meant I saw every shade of local, not to mention the ultra-wealthy tourists who frequent the village in the summer months. My years studying and then teaching history in New York City also inspire me, both in understanding what adolescent readers want and in the exposure to the many different types of people I never could have met anywhere else. I love dichotomies, and teaching in the public schools while living an outside life as a transplant surrounded primarily by young professionals might be the starkest I’ve ever known. And of course the history - what is history if not thousands of stories? And each one inspires my own. More recently, and most prominently, I’m inspired by my kids and my role as their mother. This pops into my work as an exploration of parent-child relationships, but also in the shifting seasons of life. Sometimes I cannot relate at all to the person I was before having children, and other times I feel more like myself than ever. This is not a unique experience, and I believe becoming a parent is likely the most significant shift in many adult lives. That sentiment inspires many characters and plotlines across my work.

What is Twisted Tide Press?

Twisted Tide Press is the publishing company that I founded to give my stories a home. It is an online space where you can read my work, follow the blog, purchase books, and even join our virtual books club (Chat by Chapter). It’s a space for me to share my writing, but will hopefully continue to grow into a place of connections for readers, too.

What can readers expect from your books?

Readers can expect a good story, morally complex characters, and at least one plot twist before you reach the end. That’s half the fun, right?

What do you enjoy doing when you're not writing?

I spend most of my time that I’m not writing with my kids. We love to take road trips to explore new places and to spend time outside. It’s been very fun sharing my favorite things with my three little ones, and learning what they love, too. I also love to cook, which takes up much of my time throughout the week. I’ve always been an athlete, and though I don’t play team sports anymore, I still love to run and train in the mornings before I start my day. I’ve discovered Pilates in the past few years, and love learning new types of workouts and exercises.

What inspired your love of reading?

It probably began with my mom, who is one of the biggest readers I know. She helped me through challenging books throughout my elementary years, softening more adult themes and decoding complex language, which taught me that all books were accessible if you had the right space and tools to access them. I read constantly growing up, and honestly, I still do. It’s simultaneously my favorite entertainment and escape, and I can’t imagine that changing anytime soon.

Why did you decide to publish independently?

I like to maintain control of my work, and I don’t have a ton of patience for gatekeeping. Many authors dream of being traditionally published, which I understand, but that was never my dream. I love to write, and I love to share my stories with others. The easiest way to do that was to self-publish, and once I dipped a toe in this world, I found it to be a special kind of rewarding that I never really anticipated.

How do you balance writing and family life?

I try really hard to be intentional about my life and schedule, otherwise it’s extremely hard for me to find a balance that works, especially with three small kids. Thankfully, time management has always been a strength of mine, though I’ve never leaned on it as hard in any other season of life. My husband is a huge part of this. Even though he works a demanding job, he makes sacrifices to ensure that I have a block of a few hours each week to dedicate to my writing. It’s an amazing gift, and one that makes all of this possible. This gets a little easier as our kids get older, too. We had three kids in 3.5 years, but now our youngest is nearly two, and the space to write is becoming much easier to find.

Who are your literary influences?

I have so many. Frederick Bachman for capturing the simplest human experiences in the most thoughtful and beautiful ways. Beatriz Williams for her incredibly well-researched historical fiction. Robert Frost for how much he says with so few words. And lately, Johnny B Truant, author of The Artisan Author, for so wonderfully articulating the version of an author that I strive to be.

What makes a great mystery in your opinion?

It has to be twisty and fun, but it also needs to be real. I like my mysteries to have true themes beyond just a fun story. Give me complicated relationships that mirror reality and nuanced characters that grow and change throughout the story. Reflect the real world and things that matter in the settings and the plots.

What advice would you give others who dream of writing a book?

Just do it. Is that overly simplistic? I was once given a piece of advice that I think about often: “Want some advice on how to get up earlier? Get up earlier.” Maybe that’s annoying, but really, if you stop letting yourself make excuses, it turns out you actually can do a bunch of things you didn’t think you could. So, yeah. Want to write a book? Just go write one.

What has the response from readers been like so far?

More than I ever could have hoped for. I am consistently blown away by the support for Cove Harbor Comeuppance and now for Beyond the Sea. It has been very special to see so many people purchasing the book, or sharing their copies, or stopping to discuss the stories with me. It’s truly amazing and I hope I can keep delivering books that my readers want.

What can readers expect next?

So much, hopefully. I’m currently working on a second Cove Harbor mystery collection and a sequel to Beyond the Sea. I’m also writing a young adult fantasy novel and have been sketching out another novel, this one set in a suburban town like the one where I live. That one's coming for the moms out there, but I’m not sharing much else about it yet. Stay tuned!

TWISTED TIDE PRESS

I created Twisted Tide Press to give my stories a home.

When I first set out on the self-publishing path, I hoped to create a place where my stories could live and where you could find them. As a cross-genre author, developing one umbrella for everything wasn't as simple as I expected. I eventually realized that each of my stories, from the shortest microfiction to the longest novel, have one thing in common: I can never resist a good plot twist.

Literature does not need a plot twist to be great. In fact, much of the most influential works hardly strive for a "gotcha" moment. Tolkien told us the hobbits must destroy the ring, Dickens never pretended that Scrooge wasn't a jerk, and Salinger's Holden Caulfield was always troubled. The journey is often infinitely valuable even when you know the destination.

That being said, my stories always provide a twist. I'll drop the breadcrumbs and nudge you along the path, but I just can't resist a surprise or two before we reach the last page. It's just how I like to write (and read).

And thus, Twisted Tide Press was born. Where will it go? Who can say? But I would love to one day expand the platform to include other writers, bloggers, and stories that jive well with my own.

Chat by Chapter

Chat by Chapter is a virtual book club where readers can connect with others on the same page of the book.

Chat by Chapter books include QR codes at pivotal moments in the story. Simply scan the code to join the discussion room, where you can vote in polls, comment on discussion prompts, and respond to other readers.

It's a new kind of book club - Anytime, anywhere.
